Tao Te #66 ~ Position
mighty oceans
majestic seas
how did they get names
such as these
rivers pay tribute to them
the streams are their tributaries
waters fall from the mountains
rush through the valleys
and always wind up at the foot of the sea
paying homage to their strength
The Sage
encourages the people
by reminding them of their greatness
guiding the people
demands humility
because only in this way
can we truly
liberate them
the people recognize the leader's heart
and therefore it is a forgone conclusion
that the caring Sage will be their leader
Victory is assured not through resistance
but through acceptance
the Sage accepts all as they are
and through unconditional compassion
non-resistance
he is irresistable and undefeatable

What can this teach us?
|
What is a tributary?
What is tribute?
What are the different meanings of "to pay tribute"?
Why do the people prefer a caring sage?
Why is victory assured through acceptance?
Why does the Sage accept all as they are?
